There Are No Good Guys

So the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is back on. It’s one of the most complex socio-political issues in the world and has been rumbling on since the creation of the state of Israel back in 1949. Well at least that’s what I thought but according to my Facebook timeline it’s actually really simple: Gaza= Good, Israel= Bad and I’m sure if I had a more politically diverse group of friends I would see people taking the exact opposite view. Religion is Ireland’s Shame

Throughout the world there are countries were the influence of religion can be clearly seen in their laws but normally this is the kind of the thing that we in the west associate with Muslim countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia. We look at these countries and condescendingly sneer at their backward stances on woman and homosexuals. We claim that they should change and become more enlightened like us. However in the last couple of months it has become clear that anyone who lives in Ireland, whether north or south of the border, has no right to judge because we still have laws in place that are frankly outdated and have no place in a modern forward thinking democracy. Financial Fair Play: UEFA but with balls?

So it was revealed today that UEFA’s financial fair play rules may actually be worth substantially more than the paper they are written on. With the first set of rules coming into effect regarding a clubs unpaid debts, the UEFA Club Financial Control Body or CFCB if you’re big into your acronyms, has taken the decision to withhold prize money from 23 clubs that participated in last years European cup competitions. Some of the clubs in the line of fire include Europa League Champions Atletico Madrid, formerly big spending Malaga and Portuguese heavyweights Sporting Lisbon. Now at this stage the prize money is just being withheld “pending further investigation” but it’s still good to see that the FFP Regulations can bite as well as bark.
